Why do some atoms form positive ions and others form negative ions?

some atoms form ions by gaining electrons whereas others form ions by losing electrons. Those atoms that form positive ions lose electrons hence they will have a net positive charge as there will be more protons than electrons whereas atoms forming negative ions gain electrons, that resulting in a net negative charge, with more electrons than protons...............
