i'll try...
y = e^x is the exponential function in which the rate at which the function is changing at some point is the value of the function at that same point.

y = 2^x, y = 3^x, y = 10^x, etc... does not have that property.

I think of it in terms of compounding interest. When it is increasing at an exponential rate it is continually compounding, rather than at intervals like a quarterly compounded rate.
