how to tell whether an element is paramagnetic or diamagnetic

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In theoretically manner, which material has unpaired electron is called paramagnetic material and if it has no unpaired electron then it is called diamagnetic material. But in practically, which material is attracted by magnet then it is called paramagnetic material, and if it is repelled by magnet then it is called diamagnetic material....

can i ask y diamagnetic get repel from magnet?

Hi Nikhil - Paramagnetic elements are strongly affected by magnetic fields because their subshells are not completely filled with electrons. So if you write out the electron configuration for an element to see whether it's subshells are filled, this should tell you whether it is paramagnetic or diamagnetic. Hope this helps

Molecular orbital diagrams will help you with this, like Atam said.
