Is there a biological or evolutionary reason some people are more sensitive to pain?

An increased sensitivity to pain is a mixed blessing: on one hand, being more sensitive to it may mean a lower risk of injury. Pain exists to warn us about things that are damaging our body, and there are a number of diseases in which people lose pain sensitivity and end up with horrific injuries as a result. But on the other hand, an unusually high level of pain sensitivity can be crippling, for what I think are obvious reasons.
