The width of the tiled portion is 2.5 feet. What is the area of the tiled portion of the patio, rounded to the nearest whole square foot?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you calculate the area of a circle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 28.26 when i did

OpenStudy (anonymous):

take the area of the 18 foot circle, subtract the area of the 15.5 foot circle then take half of that since it's a semicircle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to check it, if you want, think of it as a rectangle... half the circumference of a 16.75 foot circle times 2.5 won't be exactly the same, but should be close

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Was my area correct before? Just so I can make sure i'm doing it correctly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got a much different answer, so maybe I am wrong, sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What formula did you use? I might have made a mistake

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(3.14 x 18 x 18 - 3.14 x 15.5 x 15.5 ) /2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when i recalculated the area i actually just got 13.3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh let me try that then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, don't... I am wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the options i was given for the answer were: 5 square feet 8 square feet 33 square feet 61 square feet and i'm unable to get any of them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I used the diameter instead of the radius... you were much closer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, it's an 18 foot circle and a 13 foot circle so 9 and 6.5 for the radii

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need to get some sleep, but that will give you the right answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i subtracted the first area 28.26 and the second area for the tiled area 20.41 and got 8? is that the correct way to do it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

take the area of the 18 foot circle subtract the area of the 13 foot circle divide by two (the picture is a semicircle)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then i got the answer of 24.335

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i accidentally hit addition, let me try that again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 7.85

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the area of the 18 foot circle? the radius is 9 remember

OpenStudy (anonymous):

28.26

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you get that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9*3.14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

area is pi r squared... need to multiply by 9 again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 254.34

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3.14 * 9 * 9 - 3.14 * 6.5 * 6.5 and then divide that by 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that sounds much better for the area of the big circle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 60.8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and thats one of the multiple choices so I think we did it right....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hopefully, Thanks!
