What do you think? coral snakes are brightly colored highly venomous snakes with red, yellow and black bands along their bodies another species of snake called the scarlet king snake, has similar bands of red, black and yellow which of the following describes the conditions that resulted in a large population of king snakes with these types of markings? I think that it is "since king snakes with these marking were avoided by predators, they were able to survive to pass on this trait to offspring."

Considering you only wrote the answer that you think is correct and not any of the other answer choices, then.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Coral snakes mated with king snakes often enough to produce another species of king snake with the red, black and yellow. King snakes and coral snakes relied on similar food sources that contributed to their unique coloring. over production of offspring increased the likelihood that the genetic mutation leading to these bands would spontaneously occur. since king snakes with these marking were avoided by predators, they were able to survive to pass on this trait to offspring.

I'd agree with you. If they mated often enough then you'd have a coral/king hybrid mix, not two separate snakes. A similar food source wouldn't really affect coloring since coloring is a phenotypic expression of their genes. Overproduction of the offspring would mean that you'd have a whole ton of all kinds. You'd have to have an overproduction of that one particular type to make all king snakes with this color. Genetic mutation is a viable thought, but it isn't something that will always definitively happen like you want. If the particular snakes with this coloration avoided predators then they're the ones that survived to pass the gene on - the ones that iddn't avoid the predators didn't get to pass on their coloration.

So in short, the last answer is the one I'd go with.

Thank You!

Red meat yellow = kill a fellow (venomous) Red meat Black = Freind of jack (non-venomous)
