What is a state variable in simple beginner programmer's terms?

I got ver 2.5.4 two days ago through th ocw MIT page for the course,

My understand of it is a variable that refelcts a monitored condition within a program. As I understand it, a state variable may indicate hold within it whether a number is prime or not. In large programs state variables are checked an depending on their values the program performs certain actions rather than others.
