Does the following sentence make sense?
"Each day, it seemed as though more and more people began to swarm to Tiananmen Square."
And if not, how should I revise it?

It makes sense. That's a very deliberate choice with "swarm" and it creates a striking image. As long as that's the image you're going for, and it works within the overall passage (doesn't clash with other images, for example), it's fine.
