It would be good if you could do this by hand The notation is just short-hand. The sum form k= 1 to 5 of (2k+3) means replace k with 1 and do the arithmetic: 2*1+3 = 2+3=5 that is the first number in the series. now set k=2 and redo the arithmetic: (2*2+3)= 7 that is the second number in the series Do that for each k, up to k=5, where you should get 13 so the sigma is short for 5+7+9+11+13 = 45
