Dankirk was the place during WWII where the French people and the Goverment was Saved After being pushed by the Nazis. Dankirk is on the edge of France near the English Channel. When the Britians say the French in need, civillians and the Gaverment went and sent ships, boat and anything that floats and hold people. The French were saved.

The British sent a force to aid the French, but before long, the Wehrmacht managed to drive deep into their lines cutting them apart. To avoid getting trapped, the British (and a few of their French and Belgian allies) retreated to Dunkirk in a race to the Channel. It was thought that the Germans would destroy the army there to finish them off, but they held back in one of the most controversial decisions that Hitler made during the war.

As a result of the delay, the British launched an operation to rescue them. hereweg0 is correct when saying that they sent everything possible whether it was a ship, a yacht, or a barge - anything that could float. They thought that they'd only rescue something like 30,000 men, but they ended up rescuing over 350,000 making it a miracle.

The downside to this is that the BEF had to leave behind pretty much all of their equipment - artillery, vehicles, weapons, etc..

The key point, though, is that it was important not only for the lives saved, but for the fact that they would go on to shore up Britain's defenses. Britain had an army returned to it. Hitler missed a huge chance to cripple Britain by taking out an army of that size. By the time the Germans realized what was happening, it was too late to do anything about it.
