There are 46 chromosomes in a cell nucleus so how many chromosomes are found in mitochondria?

As I understand it, mitochondria have very little DNA which does not form chromosomes. When cells divide, all the mitochondria in one part of the cytoplasm is passed to one of the daughter cell and all the mitochondria in the other part of the cytoplasm is passed to the other daughter cell. Clear?
