what and how do i do direct and inverse proportion?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

direct proportion: y is directly proportional to x y=kx where k is a constant For inverse proportion, y is inversely proportional to x y=k/x where k is a constant

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now what i s direct inve

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you mean what the meanings of direct and inverse are?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes and how i do it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

direct means that if y increases, x also increases if y decreases, x also decreases inverse : if y decreases, x increases if y increases, x decreases but remember, there is a fixed ratio between x and y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now whats the ratio between the the two of them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there should be some informations given. for example, the question gives us y=3 while x=6 . y is inversely proportional to x We can put the (6,3) into y=k/x 3=k/6 k=18 then equation of the relation between x and y is y=18/x for direct proportion, it is the same way to do it but put x and y into y=kx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so how do u know when the number will increase and decrease

OpenStudy (anonymous):

from the relation given, there are two types of questions 1st type: it is stated directly. For instance, given y=...and x=.....and y is directly proportional to x. Find the relation betwwen x and y 2nd type: given y=4 while x=8 and y=2 while x=4 then you can see x increases from 4 to 8 but y increases from 2 to 4 both increases so the numbers are increasing
