In the figure below, ratio of AB to DE or the ratio of AC to DF is proportional to the ratio of 5 to 2. Which x + y?

i just need to hurry up and graduate so i can focus on my pregnancy. And this question is being a pain in the retricecause i cant figure it out and its starting to make me mad

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My answer is x=40 and y=28. My reasoning is probably flawed, but here goes! The ratio between DE and FD is 16/20, so, if these two triangles are to scale, then we need to find an x and a y that will give us the same ratio of 16/20 (or 4/5.) therefore, 40-12 = 28, and 28+7 =35. 28/35= 4/5. That’s my hypothesis! Don’t count it as gold tho! Does that help any? Good luck with your pregnancy!

Directrix (directrix):

Given: AB is to DE as AC is to DF as 5 is to 2. AB/DE = AC/DF = 5/2 (x-12)/16 = (y + 7)/20 = 5/2 (x-12)/16 = 5/2 2x -24 = 90 2x =114 x = 57 -------- (y+7)/20 = 5/2 2(y+7) = 5*20 2y + 14 = 100 2y = 86 y = 43
