2nd Hint: Since know that absolute value equals "distance". and distance must positive, how can it possibly equal something negative?

Well, actually, I'd be happy to give you steps....if that were possible. In this case, it is not possible. Since absolute value cannot be negative, algebraic steps have been rendered obsolete. Distance cannot be negative, which means no such x can satisfy the equation.
