I don't think the main purpose of openstudy is to chat. Having potentially thousands of people all hock potched into one group would, in my opinion, not be condusive to studing :-).

The chat is more of a “study break” area when you need a breather or want to connect with the people helping you in a way that doesn't involve the subject at hand directly. We're still thinking about ways to improve it, though.
