What fluid surrounds the cells inside an organism and forms the medium in which they live?

OpenStudy (blues):

In general, the term is "extracellular matrix" or ECM. Though it always seemed to me that "bathed in fluid" is not the best way to describe cells which are attached firmly to each other in tissues, there is quite a bit of fluid flowing around between them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

interstitial fluid. ecm relates to the extracellualr scafolding. it is similar in its electrolytes components to plasma, albeit with lower protein (aminly albumin) content
