OpenStudy (anonymous):

which of the following choices would be best measured using light years? A.how long a star will live B.the wavelength of light C.the distance from the earth to the moon D.the distance between two stars

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would say c?

OpenStudy (jamesj):

First of all, light years is a measure of what? Time, distance, mass, sweetness, what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well distance

OpenStudy (jamesj):

yes distance. Hence A is wrong. Now what is the scale of the wavelength of light? Big or small? Tiny, 1/1000000 of a meter How far is a light year? Incredibly huge: 9,460,000,000,000 kilometers

OpenStudy (jamesj):

How long does it take for light to travel from the earth to the moon?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but it could be earth to the moon

OpenStudy (jamesj):

1.5 seconds.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

JamesJ it's C right?

OpenStudy (jamesj):

1.5 seconds is a tiny, tiny fraction of a year. Light years don't sound like a g good measure of distance for that to me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but think about it, the distance between the stars and the distance between the earth and moon. Clearly the distance between the earth and moon is more.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right?

OpenStudy (jamesj):

What?! The nearest star to our sun is 4.2 light years away!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its saying the distance between "two stars"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

read it carefully once again*

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Yes ... and most stars are light years apart from their nearest neighbor.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

just as the sun is 4.2 light years away from its nearest neighbor.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i think ur right because i have been thinking about it, but let me verify it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok it's D, my bad.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

I am right because if stars were that close to each other, our night sky would be incredibly bright as the density of stars would be so much higher.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes indeed, sorry I did not research properly and did not have a deep knowledge of it before. Thankyou for ur correction & I have learnt something new myself lol.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

back of the envelope, about 100,000,000 times brighter, which would be a lot brighter! ;-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i think she isn't here anyway, so yeh clearly the answer is D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D.
