How do I identify the theme of a poem? Help! I didn't understand what the teacher said.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i tried understanding some poems. but i guess im just thinking too literally

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think that's the tone you're saying, like, the poem is happy, depressed, nervous or what-not.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To find a theme, just ask yourself what topic the poem is discussing. Common themes are death, religion, and love.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hey, can i give you an example of a poem and tell me what the theme is? because i can understand things better when demonstrated.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm ok, gimme a sec to find a poem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok here http://www.authorsden.com/visit/viewPoetry.asp?id=135719

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i would say the theme would be life because he is complaning about everything that is happening in his life

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH!! LOL now i get it!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the theme is like the message of the poem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes basically it is... its kind of like a moral but it is not telling you the whole story in a sumed up lesson.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the theme is usually just one word like life, love, family , friendship

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok thanks for your help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your welcome! :)
