OH! I just finished this unit :).

Well WWI was essentially caused by a conflict between ethnic Serbians and Austria. Serbians were becoming increasingly nationalistic and desired independence from Austria. The Austrian government oppressed some of the Serbs, resulting in the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand*. The Black Hand* was responsible with Gavrillo Princip* behind the plot. Eventually, the Serbians rose up in war against the Austrians as they too prepared for war. Germany, under Bismarck*, issued the Blank Check*, advocating support for Austria's actions. Tsar Nicholas II* supported Serbia to get back at the Germans.

WWI saw the beginning of machine gun warfare* and trench warfare*. The Schlieffen Plan* was a military tactic to sweep through Belgium into France if France decided to enter the war. Eventually, England and France joined the fight, causing the evolution of a two front war*. WWI saw the use of mustard gas as well (one of the first biological warfare instances.) Finally, the sinking of the Lusitania* brought the US into the war. Hindenberg* and Ludendorff* were the main generals of the German military with Emperor William II* as monarch of Germany. An Important consequence of WWI was the Russian Revolution.
