OpenStudy (anonymous):
Colonization of W Africa was performed primarily during the Scramble For Africa. Colonies were used as a way for transportation to further colonial claims and for riches (ex. the Gold Coast, Ivory coast, etc.) The interior was slightly more based on land claim and power.
