1. For the nondegenerate quadratic equation Ax^2+Bxy+Cy^2+Dx+Ey+F=0, explain what each of the following tells you about the graph of the equation. a. B^2- 4AC=0 b. B^2-4AC>0 c. B^2- 4AC<0 d. B is not equal to 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a. 2 equal real roots b. 2 different real roots c. 2 complex roots d. 2 roots

OpenStudy (anonymous):

also doesn't a. tell you that the equation will be a parabola. b. will be a hyperbola. c. will be an ellipse/circle. and d. will be either a hyperbola or an ellipse/circle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's a quadratic form, so it can be all that, depend on D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

these are the coefficients for the general equations of the conics.. they will determine what type of conic you have... a. parabola b. hyperbola c. ellipse

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you! what about d?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"B" is the coefficent of the xy term. if B is not equal to zero, i think it was just a rotation of those conics... sorry i can't remember...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok! thank you anyways :)
