Yes and no. I found the topic while I was reading about Databases, but I want how this knowledge can help me with databases and If it have more applications.

I don't know if it has more applications, I only learned about it in the context of databases.

It's useful because using relational algebra you can describe all the various types of operations that relational databases do. In essence it helps you *think* like a database and gives you a frame of reference to compare the vocabulary of various databases. For example, MySQL and Oracle have some differences in how they handle complex queries, etc, etc.

Wikipedia and the internets are your friend, bro. Both of those will be far more up-to-date than any textbook I could recommend. :)
