I want to install a sensor based system in my water tanks in order to know what level the water is w/o physically checking. What type of sensor do I use? Please help.

install some sort of thing which would give a measure of pressure..like a spring at bottom.its compression will be proportional to pressure and you may calliberate it thereafter..u can use photo diodes too by using the reflection/refraction property..

Depending on the tank's dimensions, you could just use a float with a variable resistor, just like a car's sending unit in the gas tank. EX: http://store.hamiltonmarine.com/browse.cfm/sending-unit-electrical-for-12-24-tanks-170537-/4,26696.html
