Given a compound and the spectral lines of its constituent elements, how would you work out what colour it will emit?

And more generally, how would you work out the emission lines given only the electron structure of an element (and how would it work for a compound)? Is it calculating all possible energies of (the energy of any band up to the valence band minus the energy of any lower band)?
