gaussian surface can pass through continous charge but not through discrete charge . how so??? can any1 xplain??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

electric field due to a charge at a distance 0 (or on itself is not defined)...so we dont pass gaussian surface through a discrete charge but a continuous distributioon contain a lot of charged particles and we pass gaussian surface through them thinking that the surface is passing in between those charges and not through them...so there is no trouble with continuous charge distribution as there was with discrete ones..
