Why are antibiotics ineffective to viruses?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

antibiotics disrupt metabolic processes - protein synthesis and dna synthesis, plus cell wall synthesis in targets selective to bacteria (after all eukaryotic cells synthesize dna and porteins as well). only problem with viruses - they do not have specific metabolic pathways of themselves - they hijack cellular (prokaryotes as well - and then they are known as phages) pathways - and as such they are (in case of humans) are own - not those of the bacteria - and therefore ineffective
