Translating Sentences into equations- yesterday, jim went on a bike ride. his average speed was 8 miles per hour. Today he went on another ride, this time average 12 miles per hour. In two days he biked for a combined total of 9 hours. Let x be the number of hours he biked yesterday. Write an expression for the combined total number of miles he biked in the two days.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yesterday he biked x hours since the total is 9 today he biked 9 - x hours since distance = rate times time, if he biked x hours yesterday he went \(8x\) miles and if he biked \(9 - x \) miles today at a rate of 12mph he biked \(12(9-x)\)

add them up and you get \(8x+12(9-x)\)
