A couple of useful phrases: crossover of chromosomes at meiosis; random assortment of alleles. Meiosis is a part of the fromation of gametes so you need to figure out exactly when the chromosomes might undergo a recombination. The formation of the zygote allows each gamete to contribute it's share of alleles. I hope this gets you going in the right direction - post again for more help if you need it.
