OpenStudy (jlastino):

What are the keywords in word problems that signal whether you use combination or permutation (w/ and w/o repetition) ?

OpenStudy (kinggeorge):

If it has the word/s "combination/s" that's generally a sign you have to use combinations.

OpenStudy (kinggeorge):

Otherwise, if you see the word "choose" combinations are generally the way to go.

OpenStudy (jlastino):

Can you give some sample questions?

OpenStudy (kinggeorge):

How about A coach must choose five starters from a team of 12 players. How many different ways can the coach choose the starters?

OpenStudy (jlastino):

So it's a combination? 12C5?

OpenStudy (kinggeorge):

I took this problem from the following link. It has several excellent problems on combinations/permutations. http://www.regentsprep.org/Regents/math/algtrig/ATS5/PCPrac.htm And yes, that is the correct answer.

OpenStudy (jlastino):

Thanks!

You're welcome.
