It gave political impetus to the idea of founding the State of Israel - the Declaration was made whilst the British had the mandate for the area having occupied it after the WW1 demise of the Ottoman Empire. There had been suggestions in the past (eg Lord Shaftesbury in the 19th century) and Jews had been steadily aquiring land even under the Turks. With the further impetus of the Second World War and the holocaust - it became a reality and was recognised by the newly founded United Nations. Immediately it sparked a series of wars (Israel is till at war with Syria) which led to insability in the region and created the problems currently faced by the Palestinian people.
