at http://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/Classes/DE/ConvolutionIntegrals.aspx the author has used tau (if I am not wrong) does it have to do anything with topology or has it been used here just as a symbol?

Tau is equivalent to 2Pi

In this case Tau is just a symbol. You can tell because since the integrals are with respect to Tau, it must be the free variable.
