Batteries involve the flow of electricity from one metal to another. What happens to these metals to cause the batteries to, eventually, stop working?

Normally zinc is the negative terminal of the battery which produce electron to move via external circuit. When zinc is depleted, a hole will form and the electrolyte will flow out, the battery is no longer usable.
