What protocol is involved in UMTS ?

There are many protocols involved in UMTS. UMTS can be thought of in 3 parts, the Air Interface, the Radio Access Network (RAN), and the Core Network. The air interface used in UMTS is W-CDMA. Also, you can check out the architecture document from 3gpp. Between every 2 network elements there is a specified interface.
