All the above remarks about the effects of cancer itself are very good, but the temporary and permanent side effects of cancer treatment should be mentioned too.

Many cancer treatments - chemo and radiation - specifically target dividing cells. A cell biologist would probably define all cancers as disorders or derangements of cell division. So many treatments target dividing cells in the cancer - but many also affect normally dividing cells in the body. With very painful and unpleasant side effects.

Also, it turns out that many of these treatments actually cause mutations to occur in normal cells. These mutations can in turn lead to the development of new cancers - so on some cases, cancer itself is a side effect to cancer treatment.
