Explain why most sports are playing with spherical balls? (Serious answers only please)

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

they roll... in all directions...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because the playing field is three dimensional? makes it more interesting

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i like capbell_st's answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

handling ease

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because there easier to catch

OpenStudy (jlastino):

they are made spherical so that there would be smooth edges which therefore causes less friction with the ball and so the force would spread around more quickly which makes it go further. It also means that when it hits the ground the force would spread and if it doesn't hit a corner it won't have another force slwing it down(and a round ball doesn't have corners.) It also means that when you kick a ball, it doesn't hurt your foot by kicking a corner of a ball
