Can someone tell me if I did this correctly, they have seriously changed things from the last time I was in school :) Add the complex expressions, and simplify. (-5.3 + 8.1i) + (5.1 + 8.5i) -27.03 + 16.6i

OpenStudy (eyust707):

i is additive so just treat i as any other variable

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Complex numbers add just as if i was a constant. -0.2+16.6i

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They only get weird when you multiply/divide, because then it's kind of like a rotation.

I have no ideal why I put -27.03 down. Do I solve for i now or just leave it as is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can't solve it for i, with complex numbers .....(x1) +/- .....(i) is as basic as it gets

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i is just the sqrt(-1), so if you replace i for \[\sqrt{-1}\], you don't get any simpler

Ok, thank you. Sorry for the delay in response, my program stopped working
