Explain how you would use the quadratic formula to solve x^2 + 8x = –2. Why is the quadratic formula the best method to use?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

First get the equation equal to 0. Then identify the values of a, b, and c.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

The quadratic formula is the best method because the trinomial will not factor. That is not to say that using the formula is better than completing the square.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it's x^2+8x+2=0 a=1, b=8, c=2.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the reason you would have to use the quadratic formula is because there are no 2 numbers that multiplies to make 2 but also add to make 8 so you cant just split it into two brackets

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Now plug those numbers into the quadratic formula.

For the final answer I got x=-8√14 is that right? cause I thought it had to have +- but I'm not sure

|dw:1334597546395:dw| you should do it once with the +b and once with the -b
