Two people are carrying a box. One person exerts a force of 123 pounds at an angle of 47.9° with the horizontal. The other person exerts a force of 94 pounds at an angle of 54.6°. Find the weight of the box.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if the box does not move then: sum of forces on the x axis is zero sum of forces on the y axis is zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you might also want to convert the force from pounds to newtons, so your mass would be in kilograms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, thank you. can you show me how to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ill try my best F1= force of the person exerting 123 pounds F2=the other person exerting 96 pounds assuming that the people are on the other side and the exert the force toward themselves and above cos(theta)=adjacent/hypotenuse adjacent is hypotenuse x cos(theta) sum of the force on the x direction F1cos(theta) - F2cos(theta)=ma=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when you calculate that, what do you find the weight of the box to be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im just showing the process. i might be able to do the whole number tomorrow, im getting sleepy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright thank you anyhow!
