In what ways have typewriters shaped computing?

OpenStudy (espex):

Typewriters have dictated the design of keyboards as well as many of the formatting standards for documents.

fonts

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Typewriters were designed with the QWERTY pattern to purposely slow down typing. That non-ergonomic, illogical pattern was also adopted on the majority of keyboards today.

sounds like an essay question; what kind of answer are you looking for? all of the above are true

It was just a thought that struck me, since I've been using a GNU/Linux system for about a month; the output on the GNU/Linux virtual console/terminal makes me think of how the older UNIXes adapted the older output systems (physically printing stuff through a typewriter thing to paper) to video screens and stuff, not to mention keywords on programming languages like "print". I had this feeling computers were made to work with character data adopted from typewriter systems. Also, where did the ASCII codes stuff originally come from?

It's like evolution!

OpenStudy (rsmith6559):

One thing that I think is germain to your thoughts: punch cards for input. The 80 column line still rules! Or the 132 column output that "computer paper" uses. Have you checked out the lp or lpr commands, yet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do 80 columns have to do with typewriters? The linux terminal is derived from "teletype" terminals, which were partly based on typewrieters. And regarding ASCII: Which part of this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASCII#History did you find lacking?
