well i hope you do know that the word "rojo" means red .. so why don't you just plug it in. Hay una pluma rojo encima de la mesa - there is a red pen on the table.

Hay una pluma *roja* encima de la mesa. "una" and "pluma" are female, so instead of the male/indeterminate "red" you need the female "roja". male/female is complicated for many people, as a rule of thumb, things that end with an -a are usually female, and thing that end with an -o are male. :)

HAY UNA PLUMA ROJA, because 'una' and 'pluma' are female so you convert it
