How do you find the equations of a parent graph? (Quadratic, Linear, Absolute Value, Cubic, Square Root, etc.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u need to consider every case and wherever the function positive, the abs value is the same and wherever it's negative, absolute value is the negative of that function

I thought parent graphs were the general form of a function?

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

yeah, but suppose I show you a graph @m_charron2 how do you know which function it is? that's what LoyalPawn seems to be asking. Example, how do you guess what the degree of the function of the graph below be? |dw:1334690830858:dw|
