This question has to do with diffusion of water down its concentration gradient, also called osmosis.

Loosely, concentration gradients are energetically unfavourable - that is, any molecule will spontaneously diffuse down its concentration gradient if one is created. If the cell is placed in a solution with a stronger solute concentration, water molecules will diffuse out of the cell. If the cell is placed in a solution of lower solute concentration, water molecules will diffuse into the cell.
