find the x coordinate of the vertex of a parabola that passes through the given points (0, -6) (-9-6)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is there anymore information with this problem? because there are infinitely many parabolas that can pass through these two points. each having a different vertex.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats the only information given in the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know if these two points you've given are the endpoints of the latus rectum? before you laugh.... read this: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=latus+rectum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have no idea

OpenStudy (anonymous):

have you only been working with parabolas whose vertex lie on the x-axis and no where else?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay then.... had to do some detective work first huh? this should be easy..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1334712023284:dw| since the two points given are on the same horizontal line then the x-coordinate of the vertex should be the midpoint of those two points... do you know how to calculate the midpoint?
