What does spanned mean when we refer to Vector Spaces.

For example: if V is spanned by a finite set....

im not sure, but if i would guess i would say it is not large, but rather finite. That is, ithas bounds.. Again, I am not completely positive

and p is vector space of all infinte polynomials. This is my guess. Someone will be able to answer positively
