What is the best explanation for the process of transpiration in plants?

Perhaps think of it simply as evaporation? which occurs when water molecules gain enough energy to break the intermolecular forces keeping them as a liquid, and enter into a gaseous state.

The only difference is simply - transpiration occurs in plants, through stomata (holes in the plants). Same chemistry, though.
