Compare and contrast the two quadratic equations below. Use complete sentences to describe the following:
The direction each parabola opens
The vertex of each parabola
y = x^2 - 4x
y = -2x^2 + 8x - 12

Answer 1

-2x^2 + 8x - 12 --> reduce to --> -2(x-2)^2 - 4
your vertex will be 2,-4
for direction to open up, check the sign of x^2, negative means it opens downward

For the other, I am sure you can do.

x^2 - 4x = x^2 - 4x + (4 - 4) = (x-2)^2 - 4
