The Texas Revolution or Texas War of Independence was an armed conflict between Mexico and settlers in the Texas portion of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. The war lasted from October 2, 1835, to April 21, 1836. However, a war at sea in the Gulf of Mexico between Mexico and Texas would continue into the 1840s.

The April, 1836 Battle of San Jacinto and the ultimate capture of the President of Mexico set into motion the actions that would legally acquire the entire southwest half of the United States. Sam Houston believed, erroneously, that the United States would immediately embrace Texas. But Congress did not and for ten years Texas struggled to survive. Finally in 1845 Texas became a state prompting the the outbreak of the Mexican- American War. After two years and the deaths of thousands of Mexicans, the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo was signed making California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado U.S. Territories.
