Mercator projection: Apparently this has to do something with secant theta and, what I don't understand, the integration of secant theta. If you need, I can copy what my lame 80s textbook says, as well as do basic sketches of the images. (theta is the angle of latitude)

The integration of secant x is ln|sec x+tan x|. I don't possibly see what it has to do with the mercator projection, however.
