4x - 10x = -40 + 8
4x - 10x would give you -6x and -40 + 8 would give you -32

so..your equation will become

\(-6x = -32\) divide both sides by -6...so x will be alone

\(\Large\frac{-6x}{-6} = \frac{-32}{-6}\)

-6 will cancel out leaving you with \(\Large x = \frac{32}{6}\) the only thing left to do now is to simplify :D
