Henry David is one of my favorites, he lived in the wilderness for two years in a cabin. By immersing himself in nature, Thoreau hoped to gain a more objective understanding of society through personal introspection. Simple living and self-sufficiency were Thoreau's other goals, and the whole project was inspired by transcendentalist philosophy, a central theme of the American Romantic Period. His experiment was to see if he could survive in the woods without the luxuries that often blind men from what's important. Thoreau's dream was to live like the indians with higher laws.
Also, not relevant but interestingly, Ralph Waldo Emerson (My favorite writer in the world) accompanied him and gave him few supplies to help him during his time on Walden Lake.
